Chuu (Korean: 츄; Japanese: チュウ) is a South Korean singer and television personality under ATRP. She is a former member of the girl group LOONA and its third sub-unit, yyxy.

She made her solo debut on October 18, 2023 with the mini album Howl.

Career[]

2017: Reveal, solo debut[]

On December 14, 2017, she was revealed as the tenth member of LOONA. Her solo single album, titled "Chuu", was released on December 28.

2018: Debut with yyxy & LOONA[]

She debuted as a member of the group's third sub-unit, yyxy, on May 30, 2018 with the mini album Beauty & The Beat.

On August 20, 2018, LOONA debuted as a full twelve-member group with their first mini album + +.

2022–2023: Dispute with BlockBerryCreative, removal from LOONA and petitions against Chuu, lightstick release, solo debut with Howl[]

On March 29, 2022, it was revealed that she is currently in a legal dispute with her agency to suspend her contract due to lack of payment.[3][4] On June 3, BlockBerryCreative announced that Chuu would not be taking part in 2022 LOONA 1st World Tour 'LOONATHEWORLD' due to schedule conflicts.[5]

On July 25, BlockBerryCreative announced that Chuu would not be participating in LOONA's new Japanese release "Luminous" nor their Japanese promotions.[6]

On October 28, OSEN released a statement stating that Chuu had set up her own agency called Chuu Co., Ltd. A BlockBerryCreative representative then revealed that they are checking the facts, and that the rumors of Chuu's transfer from the agency are groundless.[7]

On November 25, BlockBerry Creative released a statement announcing Chuu's removal from the group due to allegedly using violent language and misusing her power towards staff members.[8] In an Instagram story on November 28, she explained that she's still grasping the situation as she knew nothing about it and hasn't been contacted by BlockBerry Creative. She added that she had never done anything that would have embarrassed her fans.[9]

On November 28, it was reported by Edaily that Chuu had signed with BY4M Studio to embark on a new start and that the agency will soon officially announce her addition in the company as well as the direction of her future activities.[10]

On February 1, 2023, it was announced that BlockBerryCreative has submitted a petition asking to suspend Chuu’s entertainment activities.[11] The following day, she personally spoke up regarding media reports about BlockBerryCreative’s action against her and LOONA members.[12]

On April 7, Chuu became the first artist to sign with the startup company ATRP.[13]

On August 4, Chuu revealed that she will release her lightstick named Kkuka.[2]

On August 17, Chuu won her lawsuit against BlockBerryCreative.[14] BlockBerryCreative eventually appealed the decision.

On August 29, Donga reported that Chuu will be releasing her solo debut album in October.[15] ATRP later confirmed the news.[16] On September 18, a first teaser was revealed, announcing that her comeback mini album is slated for release on October 18. Through a series of teasers, the title was later revealed to be Howl.[17]

2024: "Chocolate", appeal trial result[]

On February 12, 2024, Chuu announced her fourth digital single, "Chocolate", which will be released the next day.[18][19]

On March 8, the 7th Civil Division of the Seoul High Court ruled in favor of Chuu in the appeal trial of her lawsuit against BlockBerryCreative.[20]

On February 9, 2022, BlockBerryCreative announced that Chuu would not participate in LOONA's upcoming concert, [LOONAVERSE: FROM], due to health reasons.[21]

On February 28, 2022, BlockBerryCreative announced that fellow members YeoJin, HaSeul, and ViVi had tested positive for COVID-19. BlockBerry stated that other members, not named, had tested positive on the self home kit and that they that they are waiting for the PCR test to confirm. As a result, LOONA will not be participating in the first round of Queendom 2.[22] On the next day, BlockBerry announced that the PCR tests came back and Chuu along with seven other members had tested positive for COVID-19.[23]

On May 10, 2022, Chuu was revealed to be the new model for Sugarlolo Sparkling.[27] On January 2, 2023, Eclipse Mints announced on their Instagram that Chuu was picked as their new model for their product Eclipse Chewy Mints.[28] On June 8, 2023, Chuu was revealed to be the new model for the brand Taylor Farms.[29] On September 14, 2023, she was appointed as a honorary ambassador for the Korean non-profit organisation Community Chest of Korea.[30]
