SHINee (샤이니, pronounced "'shine-ee'" Japanese: シャイニー) is a four-member boy group formed by SM Entertainment in 2008. They made their debut on May 25 on SBS's Inkigayo with their promotional song "Replay". The group started as a five-member group with Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho and Taemin.
The group's name is a combination of "shine", meaning light, and the suffix "ee", therefore meaning "one who recieves light".[1]

2008: Debut with Replay, The SHINee World, and first music show win[]

On May 19, 2008, SM Entertainment introduced SHINee and its five members: Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho, and Taemin, as a "contemporary-R&B boy group with the goal of becoming trendsetters in all areas of music, fashion, and dance."[1] The group's debut mini album, Replay, was released three days later on May 22. On May 25, the group held their debut stage at SBS's Inkigayo. By the end of the first-half of 2008, the mini album had sold nearly 18,000 copies in South Korea.[2]
SHINee made their first-ever comeback with the release of their first full-length album, The SHINee World, on August 29. Its lead single, "Love Like Oxygen", was released on August 22 and is a remake of Martin Hoberg Hedegaard's song "Show the World".[3] The song helped SHINee achieve their first music show win on September 18 at Mnet's M! Countdown.
On October 30, SHINee released a repackage of The SHINee World, titled Amigo.
2009: "Rookie grand slam", Romeo, and 2009, Year of Us[]
At South Korea's major year-end awarded in 2008 and beginning-of-year awards in 2009, SHINee became the first-ever artist to achieve a "rookie grand slam", winning every Rookie of the Year award at said award ceremonies.[4]

On May 18, SHINee released "Juliette", the lead single from their then-upcoming second mini album. The group's second mini album, titled Romeo, was released a week later, on May 25.
SHINee's third mini album, 2009, Year of Us, was released digitally on October 19 and physically on October 25. The mini album's lead single, "Ring Ding Dong" was previously released on October 14. The music video for "Ring Ding Dong" remains SHINee's most-viewed music video, with over 163 million views on YouTube as of 2023.
Following the success of "Ring Ding Dong", in December the group began promoting "Jo Jo" as the second promotional single from their third mini album.
2010: Lucifer, Hello and first concert tour[]

On July 21, 2010, SHINee released their second full-length album, Lucifer, along with its title track of the same name. The album went on the become the sixth-highest selling album in South Korea for the year with over 120,000 copies.[5]
A repackage of Lucifer, titled Hello, was released on October 1.
On December 26, the group embarked on their first-ever headlining concert tour, titled SHINee World, at Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan. The tour eventually concluded on November 24, 2011, at Osaka-jō Hall, attracting 110,000 fans in total.[6]
2011: Japanese debut and activities[]

SHINee's debut Japanese single, "Replay -Kimi wa Boku no Everything-" was released on June 22, 2011. Within its first-week, the single recorded more than 91,000 copies sold, thus setting a new-record at the time for the highest-selling debut by a South Korean act on the Oricon Chart.[7]
On August 28 and October 21, the group's second and third Japanese singles, "Juliette" and "Lucifer" were released, respectively.
In November 2011, SHINee were invited as the opening act of the 6th London Korean Film Festival. The group held an sold-out hour-long concert, thus becoming the first Korean act to hold an independent concert in London.[8]
The group's first Japanese studio album, The First, was released on December 1. The album was eventually certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for selling over 100,000 copies.[9] On December 24, a commemorative concert was held at Tokyo International Forum Hall A in honor of the album's success.
As part of SM Entertainment's winter album, 2011 SMTOWN Winter 'The Warmest Gift', the group participated with a cover of Wham!'s "Last Christmas".
2012: Sherlock, "Dazzling Girl", and second concert tour[]

SHINee's fourth mini album, Sherlock, was released worldwide digitally on March 19, 2012, and physically two days later. The album's title track, "Sherlock (Clue + Note)" is a hybrid of two of the album's b-sides, "Clue" and "Note", and its music video features Jessica Jung. The mini album eventually became the fifth-highest selling album in South Korea for the year with over 180,000 copies.[10] A Japanese version of the song was later released on May 19.
The group embarked on their first Japanese nationwide tour, titled SHINee World 2012, beginning on April 25, 2012. The tour attracted over 200,000 fans across Japan.[11]
On October 10, SHINee released their fifth Japanese single "Dazzling Girl".
Following the conclusion of their Japan tour, SHINee embarked on their second Asia tour, SHINee World II. Beginning on July 21, 2012, the tour visited cities across South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. The tour eventually concluded on December 8 in Singapore.
On December 12, the group simultaneously released their sixth Japanese single, titled "1000 Years, Always By Your Side..." and the live album for their first Japan tour.
2013: The Third Album, Boys Meet U, second Japan tour, and Everybody[]

In the first quarter of 2013, SHINee released their third studio album across two parts. The first part, titled Dream Girl - The Misconceptions of You, was released on February 19 with "Dream Girl" serving as the title track. The second part, titled Why So Serious? - The Misconceptions of Me, was released on April 26 with "Why So Serious?" serving as the title track. Jonghyun was absent from both the music video and live stages for "Why So Serious?" after a car accident left him with a broken nose.[12][13] A repackage combining both parts of the album, titled The Misconceptions of Us, was released on August 8.
On March 13, the group released their seventh Japanese single "Fire". Three months later, on June 26, the group's second Japanese album, Boys Meet U, was released. In support of the album, SHINee embarked on their second Japan tour, SHINee World 2013 ~Boys Meet U~, from June 28 through December 11.
On October 14, the group's fifth mini album Everybody was released. Later, on December 4, their ninth Japanese single "3 2 1" was released.
2014: First world tour, I'm Your Boy, and third Japan tour[]
On January 29, 2014, it was announced that SHINee would embark on their first world tour, SHINee World III.[14] The tour began on March 8 in Seoul, visiting cities in Latin America, Taiwan, and China before concluding on June 22 in Jakarta, Indonesia. In total, the tour gathered an estimated 72,000 fans.
SHINee released their 10th Japanese single, "Lucky Star" on June 25. Along with preceding singles "Boys Meet U" and "3 2 1", "Lucky Star" was included on the group's third Japanese album I'm Your Boy, which was released on September 24.
In support of their third Japanese album, the group embarked on their third Japan tour, titled SHINee World 2014 ~I'm Your Boy~, from September 28 through December 19. Later, two encore performances at Tokyo Dome were added and scheduled for March 14–15, 2015.[15] The tour was attended by over 300,000 fans.[16]
2015: Fourth concert tour, Odd, "Sing Your Song", and "DxDxD"[]
From May 15 through May 17, 2015, SHINee kicked off their third Asia tour, SHINee World IV, in Seoul at Olympic Gymnastics Arena. Throughout the rest of the year, the group visited cities in Taiwan, Thailand, and China.

On May 18, the group released their fourth Korean album, Odd. The music video for the title track "View" was released the next day. The album peaked at No.1 on the Gaon Album Chart, with over 165,000 copies sold within its first month of release.[17] The repackaged version of the album, Married to the Music, was released on August 3.
SHINee's 11th and 12th Japanese singles, "Sing Your Song" and "DxDxD", were released on October 25 and December 13, respectively.
2016: DxDxD, second world tour, 1 of 1, and "Winter Wonderland"[]
On January 1, 2016, SHINee released their fourth Japanese album DxDxD. In support of the album, the group embarked on their fourth Japanese tour SHINee World 2016 ~DxDxD~. The tour gathered 350,000 fans, bringing the group's cumulative concert attendance in Japan to over one-million.[18]

On May 18, the group released their 13th Japanese single, titled "Because of You".
On June 22, SM Entertainment announced SHINee would embark on their fifth concert tour, SHINee World V, in September.[19] The tour would eventually see stops in Japan, North America, Hong Kong, and Thailand.
On September 27, SM Entertainment announced that SHINee's fifth full-length album, 1 of 1, would be released on October 5.[20] Within its first month of release, the album sold over 170,000 copies.[21] A repackage version of the album, titled 1 and 1, was released on November 15.
SHINee's 14th Japanese single, "Winter Wonderland" was released on December 15, 2016.
2017: Five and Jonghyun's passing[]
SHINee released their fifth full-length Japanese album, Five, on January 27, 2017. In support of the album, the group embarked on their fifth Japanese tour SHINee World 2017 ~Five~. The tour, which took place from January 28 through September 24, attracted over 430,000 fans.
On December 18, member Jonghyun passed away from a possible suicide.[22]
Prior to the passing of Jonghyun, SHINee was slated to hold a series of dome concerts in Japan in February 2018. On December 24, it was announced that following discussions, the remaining members decided to continue promoting as a four-member group and proceed with their Japanese concerts as scheduled.[23]
2018–2020: From Now On, 10th anniversary with The Story of Light, and first military hiatus[]

SHINee's first activities as a four-member group took place through their sixth Japanese concert tour SHINee World The Best 2018 ~From Now On~. On March 26, 2018, the group released their first Japanese best album SHINee The Best from Now On, which includes the Japanese single of the same name, of which posthumously includes Jonghyun.
On May 16, SM Entertainment announced that SHINee would commemorate their 10th-anniversary with a three-part album titled The Story of Light.[24] Part one of the album, which featured the title track "Good Evening", was released on May 28, followed by part two on June 11 and part three on June 25, respectively. The repackage version of the album, 'The Story of Light' Epilogue, was released on September 10.
The group released their fifteenth Japanese single, "Sunny Side", on August 1.
Member Onew enlisted for his mandatory military service on December 10, 2018,[25] followed by Key on March 4, 2019[26] and Minho on April 15, 2019.[27] Thus, SHINee entered an indefinite hiatus period that saw member Taemin focus on solo activities.
Onew was discharged from military service on July 8, 2020,[28] followed by Key on September 24,[29] and Minho on November 15.[30]
2021–2022: Don't Call Me, SuperStar, and second military hiatus[]
On January 6, 2021, SM Entertainment announced that SHINee would be returning after 2.5 years with their seventh full-length album.[31] The album, titled Don't Call Me, was released on February 22 and later certified Platinum by the KMCA for over 250,000 copies sold.[32] On April 4, using the Beyond LIVE platform, the group held their first-ever online concert Beyond LIVE – SHINee : SHINee World.

SHINee's seventh repackage album, Atlantis, was released on April 12.
To celebrate their 10th Japanese debut anniversary, SHINee held an online fanmeeting via Beyond LIVE, titled SHINEE World J Presents 〜 Bistro de SHINee 〜, on May 23. The next day, the group released their first Japanese digital single "Super Star".
On May 31, member Taemin enlisted for his mandatory military service.[33]
On June 28, the group released their first Japanese extended play, titled SuperStar. Following the extended play's release, SHINee entered its second military-based group hiatus.
2023: 15th anniversary with Hard, sixth concert, and Onew's hiatus[]
Taemin was discharged from military service on April 4, 2023.[34] Weeks later, on April 24, it was announced that SHINee would held their first full-group fanmeeting in 2 years, 2023 SHINee Fanmeeting 'Everyday is SHINee Day' : Piece of Shine, on May 27 and May 28.[35]

On May 31, SM Entertainment announced the group will hold their sixth Korean concert, SHINee World VI : Perfect Illumination, from June 23–25 at KSPO Dome in Seoul.[36] Moreover, the third and final date on June 25 will be simultaneously livestreamed through the Beyond LIVE platform.
On June 1, it was announced via the group's social media accounts that their eighth full-length album, Hard, will be released on June 26.[37] A music video for the song "The Feeling" was pre-released on June 10.
SM Entertainment announced on June 9 that Onew would be entering a hiatus period for health-related reasons. Thus, he will be absent from the group's upcoming concert and album promotions.[38]
On July 5, it was announced that SHINee will be releasing a film titled, My SHINee World, which commemorates their 15th anniversary. It will be released in September.[39]
2024: Contract renewal discussions, upcoming release[]
On February 8, 2024, SM Entertainment revealed that SHINee will be releasing a mini album in the second half of the year.[40]
On March 5, it was announced that SM Entertainment is positively discussing contract renewal with Minho and Key, while Onew is exploring various options. Taemin's contract will be expiring in March and is reported not to renew. However, SM Entertainment will continue managing SHINee's activities.[41] Ultimately, both Taemin and Onew decided to sign with a new agency to manage their solo activities,[42][43] while Key and Minho renewed their contracts with SM Entertainment.[44]
