Career[]

2017: Produce 101 Season 2 and MXM[]

In 2017, Youngmin participated in the second season of Mnet's survival television show, Produce 101, along with other four trainees from his agency, Brand New Music. He was eliminated in the episode 11 after raking 15th place, hence not being able to debut in Wanna One.[1]

On September 6, 2017, him, alongside other Produce 101's eliminated trainee Kim Dong Hyun, debuted together as the duo MXM with the mini album, Unmix, and its title track, "I'm The One". The duo is also a sub-unit of the Brand New Music's upcoming boy group known at the time as BRANDNEWBOYS.

2018: YDPP[]

On April 5, 2018, he debuted in a project boy group between Starship Entertainment and Brand New Music called YDPP with the digital single "Love It Live It". The group was composed of the two MXM members plus two trainees from Starship, Jeong Sewoon and Lee Kwang Hyun.

2019–2020: AB6IX, DUI controversy[]

In 2019, Youngmin was revealed as a member of Brand New Music's new boy group, AB6IX, consisted of all four trainees of Produce 101 and another trainee from the agency. The group debuted on May 22, 2019 with the EP B:Complete and its title track, "Breathe". Before their official debut, a performance video of the track "Hollywood" was released on April 25, 2019.

On June 4, 2020, Brand New Music revealed that on May 31, after drinking at a personal gathering, Youngmin was stopped by the police when he drove home. He was charged with a DUI and had his license revoked. In light of this, Youngmin had temporarily halted his activities from AB6IX and will not participate in their third EP Vivid. It is said that he is reflecting deeply on his actions and plans to participate in any further police investigations.[2] Later that same day, he posted a handwritten apology to the AB6IX fancafe.[3] On June 8, Brand New Music announced Youngmin's departure from the group with respect for his wish to no longer cause harm to the group.[4]
